Preventing and Eradicating Maryland Lawn Pests

lawn pestsLush green lawns are synonymous with summers in Maryland because of the amount of rain and sun we get here in the Mid-Atlantic. Unfortunately, there will always be pests that will try to ruin our perfectly green lawns during the summer months. Getting rid of these pests and preventing them from ever inhabiting your grasses can be difficult sometimes, but there are ways to avoid them if you know some common pests and what their habits are. We’ve compiled a list of some of the worst lawn pest culprits and ways to keep them off your lawn.

Mold – Believe it or not, grass can actually develop mold. This problem usually comes from overwatering your lawn or watering at the wrong time of day. For instance, if you water your lawn at night, it gives the water time to sit on the grass stalks rather than soaking into the earth or being dried by the sun. Mold grows on grass in the same way that it grows in any damp, dark place. You can prevent different types of mold from growing on your grass by regularly aerating your lawn, watering at the right time of day, and scarifying (cutting and removing debris) your grass.

Ant Nests – Nobody likes ants in their homes or around them. Even though they’re pretty amazing creatures, they’re unsightly and pesky to have in your yard. Ants aren’t really something that can be prevented, but they can be removed. Don’t try using ant sprays outside since they’re not formulated to go deep enough into the ant hill. Instead, call an extermination company and have the professionals come take care of the ant colony.

Moles – If you have an infestation of grubs or worms, you might also have moles. They’ll control the population of these pests, but they’ll also cause their own problems. Soil frequently gets dug up on to the surface where the mole holes are. The soil can make it difficult to mow and can be hazardous when you’re walking around your yard. There are two good ways to get rid of moles. For one, you can put mole traps in their holes. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, calling a wildlife control service is a good alternative.

These lawn pests may make you want to tear your hair out. It’s important to remember that there are ways to prevent and get rid of these pests without causing harm to the environment around them.
