Summer Lawn Care Tips

The longer days and bright sun of summer bring the height of the growing season for your lawn. But too much heat can take a toll on your yard and wilt your summer enjoyment. Make the most of the season with these summer lawn care tips.

Watering

The heat and lack of rain during summer months can dry your lawn out. Proper watering and water conservation is essential all year long, but particularly during summer. Most lawns need about one inch of water a week. You can test how long you should water by marking some plastic bottles or containers one inch from the bottom and placing them around your yard as you water. Time how long before the water reaches the mark at one inch, and you’ll know how long to water each week.

Safe Mowing

In the summer you may be tempted to mow your lawn in sandals and shorts, but for safety, you should always wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Just as your lawn needs extra watering during the heat of summer, make sure you stay hydrated yourself as you work in the hot sun.

Summer Insects

Insects such as fleas, ticks and fire ants can appear during summer months, and may even make their way from your lawn into your home. To prevent this, it’s essential that you monitor your yard for insects and other pests and treat it with proper pest control.

Overall Lawn Health

Even with regular mowing, watering and fertilizing, underlying problems such as damaged turf and bare spots may require additional lawn care measures. Evaluate your lawn for signs of irregular color, texture and thickness, as these could be signs of damage from pests or disease. While your lawn may be the focal point of your landscape, don’t forget about the health of your trees and shrubs.
