August is coming to an end, and Fall is just around the corner! Taking care of your lawn now will give you extra time to enjoy the crisp Fall air and help your student with their homework.  The following tips will help you prepare your landscaping for the coming seasons!

Fall Landscaping Maintenance Tips

  • Adjust Your Mowing Height: Some landscapers recommend raising the height of your lawn mower in summer to reduce heat stress to your lawn. However, don’t forget to return the mower deck to its normal height in fall. The average height for most mowers is about 2 inches. Cutting your lawn short during the Fall helps prevent grass from becoming matting down under leaves and snow.
  • Water on Schedule: Even in the Fall, your grass gets thirsty. If Fall turns out to be a dry season, don’t forget to water once or twice per week long enough to soak the soil several inches deep. Early morning is the best time of day to water as there will be less evaporation. Avoid watering in the evening to prevent possible fungal diseases.
  • Fertilize: Fall is the best time to fertilize your landscaping if you live in cooler areas of the country. Cool-season grasses, such as bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass, respond well to feeding in early September and again in late fall (late October or November). It helps them green up earlier and look better in spring.
  • Check for Thatch: Thatch is a layer of dead organic matter mixed with the living plants. This can lead to disease and insect problems as well as damage from drought and cold weather. Dethatching involves cutting through the thatch layer and ripping out the debris, and can be an arduous process for homeowners.
  • Aerate: Aeration reduces thatch, improves drainage, and loosens soil by pulling plugs of soil out of your lawn.  Aerate cool-season grasses in early fall and warm-season grasses in spring. Aeration is one of the many landscaping services offered by the Atlantic Maintenance Group.
  • Drain Irrigation Lines: Make sure to completely drain your lawn’s irrigation system before freezing weather arrives, to prevent frozen and cracked pipes from needing to be replaced in the spring. Shut off the water to the system, and try using an air compressor to push the remaining water out of the system.
