A Guide to Outdoor Lighting Fixtures for Landscapes
Here’s a guide to some common outdoor lighting fixtures that you can use in your backyard.

With spring on the way, more homeowners are beginning to daydream of life outdoors in the comfort of their home landscapes. Pretty soon we’ll be able to enjoy fire pits and warm summer nights with the natural light of fireflies to keep us company. However, the best landscapes need more than lightning bugs to look their best. Outdoor lighting brings out the best in landscapes, making them safer and more beautiful. Here’s a guide to some common outdoor lighting fixtures that you can use in your backyard.

Spotlights and Floodlights

Spotlights and floodlights illuminate one part of your landscape for a particular purpose. Typically, spotlights are used to highlight parts of your landscape – illuminating a tree, for example. They can also be used for security purposes, as in the case of floodlights. Floodlights usually have higher wattage and a wider angle than the usual spotlight. Floodlights can also be used to evenly illuminate an entire wall – these lights are usually referred to as “wall wash” lights.

Path and Area Lights

Both path and area lighting are used to illuminate pathways around a yard, so they have a very practical use in keeping your friends and family safe while walking around at night. Path lights are usually used for this – these are the little lights placed every few feet on the side of a fixture. Area lights aim lights down to light up an entire area. For this reason, area lighting is also typically used to highlight gardening beds and other prominent landscaping features.

Well Lights

Another way to highlight important parts of a landscape is to illuminate them from below. Well lights fit this purpose and are installed below ground level. They are used to illuminate features that have to be placed in a turf area. The underground placement allows for mowers to navigate on top of them .

Hardscape Lights

Lighting can also be installed directly within the hardscaping elements of the landscape to create a very streamlined, natural aesthetic. Hardscape lights typically attach to overhangs as well as the undersides of capstones. It’s another way to get very practical lighting in your patio, outdoor kitchen, or other hardscaping feature.
