Are your garden and outdoor spaces plagued by pesky bugs and critters? Keeping your plants and skin safe from pests while maintaining a minimally chemical treated garden can be tough, but there are plenty of natural options, including special plants! You might be surprised to learn that there are a wide variety of plants that repel all manners of pests when used in the right way. Today, we’ll be sharing five of our favorite pest controlling plants.

Mint

Before you think about planting mint, be warned, it will spread like nobody’s business. That said, having a full garden of mint isn’t the worst choice, as mint is a highly useful herb that helps to repel insects and can be used in many different ways. Mint plants are thought to keep away chiggers, fleas, beetles, ants, mosquitoes and even deer and mice.

Nasturtiums

If you’re looking to keep pesky plant eaters away from your garden, the beautiful blooms of the Nasturtium plant are for you. Nasturtium is an excellent companion plant as it helps keep your garden safe from aphids, whiteflies, and cabbage loopers.

Lavender

Along with being a calming, pleasant scent, lavender repels moths, fleas, mosquitoes, and flies. Hanging dried flowers, or planting them just in front of doors and windows, can help keep pests away while letting you enjoy the lovely scent.

Lemongrass

There are several types of plants that create citronella oil, which you may already be familiar with. Lemongrass, along with citronella plants themselves, can be used to keep mosquitoes away by using the oil directly on the skin or diffused in the air. Unlike citronella, lemongrass can also be used in cooking, making it a multi-purpose garden inhabitant.

Catnip

By attracting plenty of cats to your yard, you won’t have to worry about smaller pests like mice and rodents! Joking aside, catnip contains a chemical called nepetalactone, which helps to repel many different types of insects. When the oil is used, it is 10 times more effective at repelling insects than many commercial formulas. Catnip is very easy to grow, but be warned as it can spread quickly and overtake your garden.
