Creating a Low-Maintenance Landscape
There are some positively stunning yards out there, maybe even in your own neighborhood. But if your yard isn’t among them, it can be overwhelming to think of the work and cost involved in fixing up what you have.

There are some positively stunning yards out there, maybe even in your own neighborhood. But if your yard isn’t among them, it can be overwhelming to think of the work and cost involved in fixing up what you have. You might have huge dreams about how you want it to look, and if you don’t have a budget to match it can feel like they will only ever be dreams.  The truth is, however, that you can get a beautiful, low maintenance, and low-cost landscape. You just need some DIY gusto and some good tips.

Fill The Beds

Commercially planted and maintained beds are often a sparse assortment of plants with a lot of dark, contrasting mulch between them. While this looks lovely, it requires a lot of time and money to create and maintain. Instead, plan to fill your beds, the existing ones and any you create, with an assortment of plants. Your goal is more plants than mulch for two reasons: one, mulch is expensive, and two, those open spaces invite weeds that you then have to take time to pull out. Instead, opt for thick groupings of perennials which will deter weeds and hold moisture in the soil so you don’t have to water as often.

Source Natural, Local Material

Natural and local materials are going to be your best friends for both beauty and cost. Using materials that occur naturally in your area will help your landscaping to blend in and fit with the surrounding landscape. And since some, if not all of these materials are abundant in your area, you can often get them for very low or even no cost. Local materials also tend to weather better, since they already exist naturally in the area. These materials can be used in many different ways as well, from creating raised beds to line walkways, and even filling in paths or driveways.

Choose Mulch That Lasts

If you do have areas that you mulch, you should choose a long-lasting mulch if you want to get the most bang for your buck. Triple shredded mulches decompose quickly and you may find that you have to re-mulch often, sometimes even many times in a year. This can add a huge price tag to your otherwise cost-effective garden. Eliminating the need for mulch as much as possible can help so that the areas where you do have to buy mulch don’t cost as much to cover.
