In order to thrive, your lawn needs plenty of water and sunlight. Since summer is here, there is no shortage of sunshine, however, water isn’t always abundant during this time of year. Drought-like conditions are common during these hot summer months. If you want your lawn to keep growing well and looking great, you’ll need to make sure it gets plenty of water!
Getting the Timing Right
Plenty of water is essential, but timing your watering correctly is just as important as how much water the lawn is getting. Incorrect timing can result in decreased absorption, and increased likelihood of disease or infestation. In general, the best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, specifically before 10am. You want the water to have plenty of time to absorb before the temperature is hot enough to cause evaporation.
Your lawn should have an average of about one inch of water per week. It’s generally best to divide this into two or three watering sessions throughout the week. Keep in mind that it takes around 30 minutes to spread half an inch of water, so a slow and steady spray will do nicely. Also, keep an eye on the weather. If there will be precipitation, you won’t need to water as much.
Keep Growing
- Don’t water too much. Allowing the soil to dry out between watering to strengthen the grass’s root system and kill off weeds.
- Raise the mower blade when temperatures are super high. When the weather is particularly hot, the roots of your grass will need a bit of shade to keep from drying out.
- Pay close attention to the area you’re watering. If you’re in a sloped area, you should go slower so that the water has enough time to absorb properly into every part of the slope. If you’re near a tree, that area will require more water depending on the type of tree and its age.
- If you’re using an irrigation system, test the soil using a screwdriver to see how long it takes for the water to reach six inches into the soil and set your system timer accordingly.
