De-icing salt is a necessity this time of year, as snow and ice aren’t the exceptions, they’re the rule! That being said, choosing the right de-icing salt can be a tricky decision. If you are trying to select the right de-icing salt for your commercial property, here is what you should keep in mind.

Rock Salt

Rock salt is the most commonly used type of de-icing salt, but it isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. It can have a very harsh environmental impact on the surrounding area. Instead of using normal rock salt, it’s a much better idea to use a carefully-engineered de-icing salt that is not as harsh on the environment but still does a great job getting ice off of the parking lot.

Brine

What is brine? One of the latest de-icing trends! Brine is made from a mix of salt or de-icing mixture and water. It is sprayed from trucks onto a variety of surfaces including sidewalks, parking lots, highways, and roads. Brine is used to stop ice and snow from accumulating and sticking on roadways. It’s a very common pre-treating substance and municipalities and commercial property owners both love how well it works.

Why Brine?

Brine is a de-icing salt that has a number of benefits over other types of salt, including:

  • It does not take very long to work since it is already mixed when it is sprayed on the roads
  • It’s very easy to apply and doesn’t need to be distributed in a meticulous fashion
  • It won’t stick to cars and corrode them in the same manner that rock salt does
  • It uses 25% of the sodium that normal rock salt does, so it’s much better for the environment
