The official start of spring is less than a week away! Now that the cold weather is mostly behind us, it’s time to take stock of your landscape and its condition. Winter can be tough on landscapes in the Mid-Atlantic, so taking the time to do a health check on your landscape can help you recognize any potential issues and remedy them before they turn into something more serious. What you do to your landscape this spring can have a lot of impact on how it grows the rest of the year. Here’s what you should be checking.

Assessing Your Soil

For landscapes with a lot of natural growth and plant life, a soil check up will reveal a lot of information about how well the landscape is holding up after the winter. Soil analysis will reveal the specific steps you should take to give your soil the nutrients it lacks and provides your plant life with a solid growth foundation that will last until next winter. Take the time to do this before scheduling any treatment programs for your lawn and/or garden.

Mulching

Mulch helps the soil preserve moisture which is key to the growth of your plant life. Therefore, once you’ve had your soil checked out and made necessary adjustments, applying mulch to your flowerbeds and gardening areas will help keep them growing for the rest of the growing season.

Doublecheck Your Sprinkler System

If you rely on an irrigation system to keep your landscape watered, now is the best time to check out and make any necessary repairs to it. Check each of the sprinklers to ensure they aren’t being blocked by anything. If you have any leaks in the system, have them patched out. And test your control panel to make sure everything is working properly. Don’t leave the health and beauty of your landscape to chance!

Removing Debris

A landscape full of dead foliage is a recipe for lawn disease, insects, and other nasty elements that you want to avoid. Debris removal helps your landscape breathe more easily and should be taken care of while the weather is still pleasant!
