Enhance Your Landscape with Pruning and More!

Pruning is essential for healthy tree and plant growth.

In the summer, we spend lots of our free time outdoors. After all, it may be hot outside, but the air is clear and sunny. With proper cooling additions in place, we can have lots of fun in our yards or patios. However, something that can really ruin the exciting mood is a poor pruning, mulching, or edging job on the landscape. The yard might look a bit neglected, which is never a good sight to see. To prevent your landscaping from falling into a summer slump, follow these essential pruning, edging, and mulching tips!

Pruning Tips

Although the spring seems far behind us, the rain it brings lasts into the summer. All of the water stored under the ground has caused plants to grow rapidly, and that includes bushes and shrubs. When unpruned, these landscaping staples may look a little unruly. Although most pruning should take place in the late winter or early spring for best results, some maintenance can still occur in the summertime. Take pruning clippers and simply cut off any significant overgrowth periodically in the summer when you notice the bushes and shrubs outgrowing their intended shapes. It’s also extremely important to perform pruning when dealing with dead or dying branches, as these can spread dangerous diseases to healthy parts of the plants.

Edging and Pruning Tips

Edging is essentially pruning but for your grass. Edging keeps landscaping and hardscaping lines clean without grass overgrowth for a satisfying, well-kept appearance. Although you can buy pruning-like tools made specifically for edging, you can also just use a trusty shovel. This is to round out the edges of the landscaping beds to create a sort of barrier that prevents the grass from overgrowing into other parts of the yard.

Mulching Tips

Lastly, we have mulching to do. Mulching is not only an attractive feature of landscaping, but it also benefits the landscaping in a healthy way. For example, natural-based mulch can help plants grow, as it can decompose over time into new soil and also prevents the already existing soil from running off in the rain. Even better? Mulch helps retain water, so your plants will remain healthy for a long time after mulching. Some mulch actually contains fertilizer as well, which can really help your landscaping plants and grass thrive in the hot and often dry summer weather. You can also use just about anything as mulch– many people use their old saved grass clippings or straw!
