Want to keep your lawn looking green and healthy year-round? The right preparation and techniques can help!

Labor Day has come and gone, and before you know it autumn will be upon us. The change in the seasons may negatively impact your lawn if it is not prepared properly, especially during the change from fall to winter. It is never too early to start thinking about the ways your lawn will be impacted by the impending cold weather. Following these best practices will ensure the health of your lawn year-round.

Aerate and Dethatch

Aeration should be done once in the fall and once in the spring. Soil slowly compresses during times of precipitation, forcing air and moisture out of the ground. This leads to a slow death of your lawn’s roots. What is aeration? It is the systematic removal of soil plugs from the lawn in order to improve pore spacing. Dethatching complements aeration, wherein excess dead grass (thatches) are removed. This improves the health of your lawn by allowing air and nutrients to reach the roots of your lawn, and the early fall is an ideal time for the dethatching process.

Keep Your Lawn Well-Fed

Fertilizing your lawn is one of the best ways to keep your lawn healthy year-round. Ideally done 4 times every season, fertilizing replenishes your lawn with essential nutrients to help it grow greener, stronger, and denser. Denser grass helps prevent weed growth and multiplication from killing your lawn. This is especially important if you are concerned about using pesticides in your lawn to stem the growth of weeds.

Top Dressing and Over Seeding

These two techniques are often combined for maximum effect. Top dressing involves applying compost, soil, or sand on top of the surface of the lawn. It encourages the growth of soil fauna to help change the soil structure, helping to reduce lawn diseases and the impact of traffic stress. This helps reduce the need for fertilization and dethatching. Over seeding is the addition of new grass to a worn-down lawn. This helps to rejuvenate an existing lawn with little impact, requiring only the addition of water for maintenance.
