Spring Lawn Care Tips

Ready to Talk to an AMG Expert About Your Project?

Your lawn comes out of dormancy from the long winter as spring approaches. While year-round lawn care and treatment can keep your yard more resistant to disease and pests, it’s important to practice these spring lawn care tips, as your landscape comes back to life.

  • Check for Lawn Diseases and Pests

The grass in your lawn is particularly vulnerable during spring, as it comes out of dormancy. A trained landscape professional should check for lawn diseases, such as dead spots, or various molds. Grubs, moles and other pests can wreak havoc on a lawn, so it’s essential to monitor the health of your lawn all year long.

  • Spring Fertilizing

Your lawn has used up reserves of nutrients during the long winter months. Like an animal waking up from hibernation, your lawn is hungry. Spring lawn fertilization will replenish these vital nutrients and get your grass ready for the coming summer.

  • Mowing

As the mowing season begins, make sure to review proper safety procedures and see that your mower is tuned and your blade is sharpened. Allowing grass clippings to remain on the lawn after mowing, a process known as grass cycling, is beneficial to your yard. The clippings provide additional nutrients and protect the live grass from drying out. After a long winter, the thatch level of your lawn should be checked, to see if dethatching or aeration is necessary.

  • Weeding Control

Treating your lawn with pre-emergents can prevent crabgrass and other grassy weeds from taking hold. Proper maintenance of mulch beds, regular mowing and weeding will also prevent weeds from taking over your yard.

  • Soil Testing

Do you know the pH level of your soil? The first step in creating the best growing conditions for your lawn, shrubs and trees is to have your soil professionally tested. Based on the results, various compounds and fertilizers may be needed to reach optimal soil conditions.
