If you’ve ever suffered a sunburn, then you know how painful it can be. Now just imagine that feeling transplanted onto the trees around your home or business. That’s what sunscald feels like. If you want to make sure that your trees live longer, then you need to keep them safe from its effects.

What is It?

Sunscald happens when a tree is overexposed to sunlight. Some trees need plenty of light, and others need to be in the shade to avoid drying out and dying a slow death. Don’t let your beautiful trees suffer this agonizing fate, especially if you need them to produce another crop of fruit. The bark, the leaves, and the fruit can all experience this condition. It can even do enough damage to burn the inner tissue of the tree underneath the bark. Dead bark can interfere with the tree’s ability to heal itself. Younger trees and trees with thin bark are more likely to be affected.

What Happens to the Trees?

Now that you know more about what sunscald is, let’s learn more about how it actually affects the trees that get scalded. The tree can get sick more easily, as its equivalent of the immune system has been lost. This means that diseases, infections, and decay unique to trees do more damage to the tree. Insects, germs, and fungi can all reach to roots of the tree now.

Preventing Sunscald

The time has come to do something about. Block the light or find a way to reflect some of it to protect your trees, especially the ones that are still growing. Older trees are more resilient, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore them. Another tactic is to minimize the pruning you do to the tree. That’s because getting carried away with pruning the tree too much can expose it instead of protecting it. Either way, you are far better off hiring an arborist to take care of your trees for you.
